Lets hear from our three Super Steering Groups which deliver our Key Drivers through the curriculum

Communication, Wellbeing and Independence

Literacy

Becky, our Literacy Lead, is going to get us going! Its always good stuff! This week some great things about outdoor spaces, and activity packs for parents about ELS

You may remember seeing Hannah’s Book Nook in the Outdoor Learning Area last week, which the students were thoroughly enjoying being able to explore. Well this week we caught up and set up the second outdoor reading area or ‘Book Nook’ in ‘Teletubby Land’. Despite the wind the students were very enthusiastic in helping us get set up, whilst exploring new and familiar books. Staff and students are welcome to explore the books in there in breaks or sessions, and the idea is that there will be a book for everyone with a mix of fiction, non-fiction, lift-the-flap, touchy-feely, musical, chapter, comic….. hopefully all the bases are covered and we will continue to mix it up each term/ season

A lovely addition to our outdoor space in time for the last few weeks of term (and hopefully some sun!)

In other news, if parents have requested an ELS home activity pack they will be sent out early next week as the final touches are being added! We’ve planned a mix of games and information for parents so it doesn’t feel like a chore to keep practicing phonics at home. If you haven’t replied but are interested please contact your class team and let us know

Personal Development

Another one of the best things about our school! Lets hear from Jo and the team about the This Is Me festival, which shows what were all about, and is happening today! Well have more about it again, and weve written about it a few times here too, but in the meantime, have a look at some lovely pictures from Hannahs class

Physical Development

And of course everything that is fabulous in the world of Physical Development too! This includes physio, hydro, MOVE, PE, HI, VI, a lot of OT and all sorts of key areas for us, including all of the Outdoor Learning, John Muir Award and many other aspects

Lets start with something that the OTs work on a lot sensory issues! A swing!

And now a bit about Rebound Therapy from Beth!

This week a team of staff were trained by ReboundTherapy.org to become trainers themselves. This means we can provide in-house training to staff which will allow even more pupils to access Rebound Therapy. Rebound Therapy uses the trampoline to provide opportunities for movement, therapeutic exercise and recreation for people across virtually the whole spectrum of additional needs

We use our Rebound Therapy sessions to provide cognitive challenge, develop communication skills, promote independence, aid wellbeing and improve gross motor skills. The therapeutic effect of the trampoline has many benefits on our bodies too, but above all, it is really fun

Rebound Trainers who will help many pupils with this exciting method

Something very nice from Andy

Joseph and his Mum have very kindly donated a Toniebox! Josephs Mum applied for a grant through a company called Foresters and bought it using this money, to donate to school

The Toniebox is a digital audio player for children which combines songs and stories with a unique element of play in an intuitive and durable unit for children. 泭Just place a Tonie character on the box and the audio plays. There are no buttons or screens and children can choose from a wide variety of different Tonies, each with their own collection of songs and stories.

It’s easy to use, engaging, and best of all, a lot of fun great for storytelling and improving listening and choice making skills.

Work Experience! With Louise!

Work experience at the Live Theatre, Newcastle upon Tyne

This year, over 100 students from the Northeast region applied for an opportunity at the Live Theatre in Newcastle for a Behind the Scenes of a Theatre work experience week where only 15 places were available. After completing a very enthusiastic application Logan received the amazing news, he had secured an opportunity! I cant believe I managed to get a place. Im so pleased as its my first work experience.

Logan had an anxious start to the week, though settled in with support from school. Throughout the week he had practical taster sessions to explore roles within the performing arts sector. I met lots of people like graphic designers, script writers, developers and producers who worked in different jobs and tried some of the tasks they do. I even sat on the front desk in the box office.泭 Towards the end of the week, he supported a small group of children to create and perform a Live Tales production.

Helen Green, who arranged and facilitated the work experience project gave fantastic feedback on Logans contributions during the week. She commented:

Day One泭 – At the beginning of the week, like everyone else, Logan was quiet and a bit nervous as were we as the staff team.

Midweek – Logan worked brilliantly with others to help complete tasks he was a valued team member and showed particular strength with tech-based tasks. Logan is very capable and made very creative contributions to the group,

Placement review Logan should feel less apprehensive and more confident in his ability to meet and connect with new people. He is really good at it and has a natural ability to make people feel at ease. He has a cracking sense of humour and should consider work-based roles that involve working with others, he is a great team player. Logan needs to hear and believe all of these things and has to have belief in himself and the positive impact he has on others. Hes Champion!

Throughout the week Logan experienced hands-on experience of all the different roles needed to run a theatre.

I got to meet a lot of people who work in the office. There were creators, developers, productors, financial and graphic technology departments. I even sat on the front desk in the box office.

Towards the end of the week Logan had found his place, working alongside the Live Theatre marketing, creative and production team was his comfy. Logan finished the week by supporting a small group of young children to create a live tale a first taste of action story.

I loved the experience of writing a script to perform a play with all my new friends.

Logan thoughts reflecting the Week

I had a brilliant time throughout the week. I really enjoyed watching my first ever theatre production. I loved the lightening effect, but it could be made to be simpler. Technology is so advanced these days. I think I would like to be more involved in producing and directing than acting.
