To cover everything related to Preparation for Adulthood in one blog would be too much and my plan is to look at parts of it each week. I will provide opportunities for you to meet in school as many have requested, but this will be in the next term. I am happy to talk to parents/carers individually if this would help.

Hannah and I have been looking at the surveys. Initially staff completed a version, then we involved current and former families in different ones. What we wanted to get some information on the different options for students leaving Percy 51吃瓜 School, but more than that where they were, what they were doing when their EHCP ceased. This, despite plenty of information does not always continue until the young person is 25 years old. Yes, the Code of Practice cites age 0-25; I don鈥檛 know many 1-year-olds with an EHCP. An EHCP will cease when the young person has achieved their education and/or training objectives. I have included a link below to IPSEA (Independent Provider of Special Education Advice) which has lots of information on everything EHCP related, including template letters.

There are parents/carers who have good, even excellent knowledge and others who say their knowledge is poor. As a school, we want to help. What I can say from personal experience and feedback from former students鈥� families is that to get the best for your young person you need to think ahead. You need to educate yourself on what is available in your area, see if it is appropriate for your young person and give yourself time.

Once a young person reaches 16 there is a choice between remaining at school, going to college, or training. Most of our students remain at Percy 51吃瓜 School until at least year 13, the year they turn 18. As young people turn 16, health services will seek their consent to share their information and, when they reach 18 it is important that parents/carers understand The Mental Capacity Act. I will cover this next week. In a nutshell, they are allowed to make decisions, have a right to make bad decisions BUT best interests can override a bad decision. Hold that thought.

I hear you ask, 鈥渨hat鈥檚 available for my child over the summer holidays?鈥� I鈥檒l continue to share what I know of or find out.

First suggestion is to look at your Local Offer. I shared links in my blog on 14^th June for all those who have children at this school.

I know that there are issues for children/young people with SEND, those who need adjustments for complex medical needs, neurodiversity etc. Many of the clubs set up are for those eligible for free school meals but some include SEND. If there isn鈥檛 anything, all I can suggest is putting pressure on your LA to provide, use your Parent Carer Forum or other groups in your area that may have a voice.

Tim Lamb Centre:

The Tim Lamb Centre are having an over 16鈥檚 SEN Festival in September. Normal membership is not required for this event. Thanks to Vicki, one of our parents who shared with me.

鈥淒on’t forget we have our over 16 SEN Festival Saturday 7th September.

This event is not to be missed! The focus is on socialising our young adults and meeting new friends. You do not have to be a member, it is open to all young adults with additional needs, aged 16 and over.

We would like to ask all attendees to bring and swap homemade bracelets with a positive word (inspired by The Taylor Swift Concert, it’s a fantastic ice breaker)

This week, the FoPHS has agreed to fund resources for the Sports Day, which is being combined with the summer MOVE event. This will take place next week. This week we funded a dance workshop as part of the This is Me Festival.

Fund-raising.

We need your ideas for fund-raising so that FoPHS can continue to support school. Do you have any ideas; could you, or someone in your family do a sponsored event? Please get in touch.

I will be sharing the Great North Run sponsored event until September. My husband and daughter are undertaking this to raise funds for FoPHS; they鈥檙e old hands or should say feet at this stage. As Niall left school in 2017 and college in 2019, we are depending on the support of those who benefit from FoPHS to support them. They need to raise 拢300 each as they are charity places, so Team Robinson needs 拢600. Our main fund-raiser in previous years has been the summer/autumn fayre and we need to fill the gap. I would appreciate your support; no amount is too small, and I have sponsorship forms for those who prefer offline donations.
