Our
Therapy
Approach

Physiotherapy

We have a team of specialist physiotherapists who assess, deliver and help individuals progress through tailored physiotherapy programmes alongside their learning programme.

The aim is to empower our students, improve quality of life and promote positive attitudes towards health and wellbeing.

We do this in three key ways:

Integrated Physiotherapy: We incorporate phsyiotherapy into the college day, collaborating between therapists and college staff. We also support college staff with all aspects of ensuring physiotherapy, movement facilitation and movement and handling training is done safely and effectively.

Rebound Therapy:We offer this to provide physical opportunities for enhanced movement patterns, therapeutic positioning, exercise, and leisure. It’s a multi-sensory experience which is excellent for improving communication skills too.

Facilitated by our physiotherapists, hydrotherapy can improve many areas of well-being including functional ability, circulation, pain, range of movement in joints, and strengthening of muscles.

Occupational Therapy

As part of the initial assessment, you might meet some of our occupational therapists. Occupational therapists create recommendations and proposed interventions for students to access our learning programmes as best as they can, while developing independence.

We support, facilitate and enable students to maximise their independence whilst at college. We also recommend suitable adaptive equipment students might need.

Some examples might include, sensory strategies, functional seating, self-care skills, fine motor skills, and access to the community.

Speech and Language Therapy

Our Speech and Language Therapists are often referred to as SALT. Our highly skilled team provides support for a range of complex communication difficulties associated with multiple and profound learning disabilities or physical disabilities.

Collaborating with college staff ensures that students gain an integrated therapy approach so their communication skills can be developed in all aspects of the college day.

We use a range of communication methods, including British Sign Language, Makaton, PECS, Intensive interaction and ACC devices. On top of this, eating and drinking difficulties are supported by dysphagia qualified the SALT team.

Nursing

Our college nurse, Lindsay, is a highly qualified and skilled professional who has been with us since 2015. She leads our team of nurses across the Foundation but is based here at college.

We offer important nurse assistance to ensure the safety and health of all of our students. This often includes administering medication, staff training, and management of complex needs. In very rare instances it also means we have a medical professional on-site in case of emergencies, for your peace of mind.

We can also support families with health funding and documentation, training, and liaising with community services.

With the age of our college students, it also means our nursing team can include health promotion and sexual health advice on-site.
